The terminology used in the hospitality sectors is very confused and misleading; making it hard to know what is the reality of the vacation that we are choosing. In Costa Rica there are many that call themselves Eco Lodges, Ecolodges, Eco Hotel, when in r
In Costa Ballena de Osa, the area where La Cusinga Eco Lodge & Preserve is located, we have put a lot of effort as a chamber of tourism to have a true marketing of what we have at our hotels, but still there are some businesses that miss guide the potential clients. In Costa Rica and other places of the world, there are many hotels that market themselves untruthfully in an effort to attract customers from a niche market that they are not part of. I know many hotels that uses the words Eco or Green in the name and their marketing materials, when in reality there are far from it, this is call “green washing” or as I call it “green painting.” It is urgent that Costa Rica regulates the tourism sector, including hotels, travel agents, tour operators, car rentals, etc. More so a country with the reputation of being a leader in sustainable tourism, ecological, rural, natural, green tourism, or whatever we want to call this important niche which we have been pioneers.
But until we get such regulations, if you want to stay at a true ecological establishment be a hotel or a lodge, a great deal of them have ecological certifications, are part of the blue flag certification, have the good practices of Rainforest Alliance, or are certified by international entities, they also can be part of TIES (The International Ecotourism Society) or something similar. Now a day’s internet is great tool to find out the truth of any place, for example www.tripadvisor.com is a place where travelers take their time to tell us about their experience that they had with the hotels that they stayed at around the world. Take a few minutes and find the information that you need to make sure your vacation are the best ever!
