While undoubtedly the large majority of our guests visit us to immerse themselves in the wonders of this region's biodiversity, here at La Cusinga we feel that it is also important to honor the local community and its residents by providing visitors the opportunity to interact and learn about Costa Rican culture. We choose to align ourselves with responsible locally-run tour operators that integrate local traditions and histories into the “eco-adventures”, thus offering a more complete tropical experience. Additionally, we offer guests the chance to learn and put into practice some of the skill sets that were vital to the original residents survival in the area, such as tropical agriculture and wood working right here on the property.
Finally, aside from facilitating a close interaction between guests and the town of Uvita-Bahía Ballena, we have always been close collaborators and participants in worthy development efforts and community projects. During the academic year we coordinate with the local school in Bahía Ballena so that the children can come and experience nature first-hand while learning about the importance of environmental conservation on a national and local level. Far from a petty desire to comply with recent trends in “social responsibility”, this genuine interest in the health of the “pueblo” stems from the simple fact that we are a part of it. Our family has lived here since the 1970's, our children grew up in these forests and beaches, and we want what is best for the land, the people, and the community at large.
