Blue Flag – Actions to Curb Climate Change – Press Release
On February 23rdof this year, we at the La Cusinga Lodge were thrilled to receive confirmation from the National Blue Flag Commission that our efforts during our first year merited a ONE STAR rating for “Actions against Climate Change”. This program, the newest of six Blue Flag initiatives, forms part of a national strategy to promote environmental awareness throughout the country and ensure that local development efforts run parallel with, instead of counter to, the conservation of natural resources.
The Blue Flag structure began in 1996 with the “Beach Program”, one which seeks to structure the development of coastal communities in accordance with the preservation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. By affiliating, leaders of Costa Rican beach communities obtained a credible way of declaring the purity of the area's waters, thus helping to expand the nascent tourism sector as well as generally improving living standards for local residents by assuring the access to safe and sanitary public areas.
Over the next six years the program spread throughout Costa Rica, raising the possibility focusing on other sectors. In 2002 the National Commission started the Blue Flag program for “Communities”, and in 2004 created a similar system for “Educational Institutions”. With the success of these additional programs came new ideas, and in 2007 came a program for Natural Protected Areas, followed in 2008 by “Hydrographic Systems” and “Actions to Curb Climate Change”.
