La Cusinga Ecolodge & Private Reserve

¡Bienvenidos a La Cusinga Lodge! We are very pleased that you have chosen to spend some time with us here in the South-Pacific of Costa Rica, a land rich in biodiversity and culture. Tucked away in a private reserve of over 600 acres, La Cusinga provides guests with sweeping ocean views, sandy beaches, natural pools, and the chance to experience the burgeoning forests and astonishing wildlife of the country’s most famous ecosystem – OSA. The hotel offers ten rustic cabins designed with sustainably-harvested wood and local materials to maximize comfort while minimizing impact on the environment. Our open-air restaurant creates an ideal setting for couples and families alike to enjoy delicious tropical dishes made with fresh produce grown on our farm.
La Cusinga’s history began around 40 years ago, when owner John Tresemer came down to Costa Rica as a young sociologist student. Finding that the deeply-rooted, agriculturally based community set in the still virgin jungles of the south-pacific represented much of what he found lacking in an increasingly modernized American society, John decided that here he would struggle to fulfill his dream of sustainable living: a balance between a respect for the area’s natural wealth with the need to harvest a living off of its capital. Shortly after his arrival, John married doña Bella, with whom he has shared the joy of creating and raising a family on this beautiful land.
After many years experimenting with different small enterprises, such as cattle raising and cocoa production, they decided to build La Cusinga Lodge. The Tresemer – Guzmán family put a great deal of effort into making sure that things were done right from the beginning, always keeping in mind that along with the privilege of living on this land comes the grand responsibility of acting as stewards for its continued protection. To build the hotel, John used the native and exotic trees he planted in one of the reforested lots in the late 1970′s, now mature sources of lumber. This foresight allowed the family to reduce drastically the environmental impact of the hotel’s construction. Additionally, the beautiful masonry unique to the lodge incorporates local stones and shells. Amazingly, no heavy machinery was used during the building process. Everything was done “de forma artesanal” (in the traditional way), using two oxen and a wooden cart to carry all the necessary materials to the site! Since the lodge opened 15 years ago, this family operation has developed into a truly sustainable business model, finding financial viability by combining a protection of the ecosystems with a close partnership in the local community’s continued human development.
Here at La Cusinga Lodge we work very hard to make sure that your time here fulfills all your expectations of a tropical experience, whether that be relaxing on an isolated beach, hiking through primary forest, or swinging in a hammock enjoying the sunset. We welcome any feedback you may have for us regarding our services and sustainable practices. ¡Que disfruten!
